San José, Costa Rica. On March 3, 2021, the Advance Mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) held its third virtual meeting on observing the elections that will be held in Peru on April 11. In accordance with decisions taken at the second meeting, the members of the Mission first met with Carmen Velarde Koechlin, National Director of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status, and later with Eugenia Fernán Zegarra and Rolando Luque Mogrovejo, of the Office of the Ombudsman of Peru.
On March 2, Piero Corvetto, National Director of the National Office of Elections of Peru described the political context of the elections and some characteistics, antecedents and challenges of his Office. The previous day, Fernando Tuesta Soldevilla offered a general analysis of lack of interest in previous elections, the effect of the pandemic and the participation of 25 parties and 17 candidates.
The representatives of the electoral bodies that are members of UNIORE who participated in the mission were joined by Sofía Vincenzi and Tasheena Obando and Andrea Tercero, Coordinator and international advisors of the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL).
