On May 3, 2021, World Press Freedom Day was celebrated with the Virtual Seminar “Journalism, Gender and Human Rights,” in which Eduardo Bertoni, Alternate Representative of the IIHR Regional Office for South America, participated.
Mr. Bertoni, together with Blanca Lilia Ibarra Cadena, President of the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data of Mexico (INAI), inaugurated the event. Mr. Bertoni stated that the rights to access to information and to the protection of personal data are closely related to freedom of the press, which are basic elements of democracy. As reported in the newspaper La Jornada, he referred to the practice of journalism during the pandemic, which has not only brought about risks for journalists, who are not considered essential personnel, but also an increase in fake news about the situation. He, furthermore, referred to the limited access to public information on matters of health, especially as it concerned women.
The activity, organized by INAI, had as its objective the identification of “the challenges of empowering women through freedom of expression and a safe environment for journalists, as well as to making known the risks for women journalists due to their gender. Participating in the activity were the INAI Commissioners and women journalists, who described and analyzed the professional problems that they faced.
