First meeting of the UNIORE Advance Mission regarding the General Elections in Peru

San José, Costa Rica. The first virtual meeting of the Advance Mission of the Inter-Anerican Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE), the purpose of which was to learn of the actions being taken with respect to the general elections of April 11, took place February 17-18, 2021. Those two days were devoted to matters relating to the political situation, the financing of individual candidates, the adjusted electoral calendar, the relevant training, electronic voting, the press campaign and the staffing and opening of the polling places.

On February 17, the Mission met first with the National Jury of Elections (JNE), represented by its President, Jorge Luis Salas Arenas, the other Magistrates and the Director of International Cooperation and Relations. There followed a meeting with Percy Medina, Chief of Mission IDEA International.

On the morning of February 18, the members of the Mission met with Iván Lanegra, Secretary General of Transparency, and Víctor Gastón, Representative of the Tribunal of Honor of the Electoral Ethical Pact, and were informed that 17 political parties had been registered.  

The Mission was comprised of Magistrates and authorities of the electoral bodies of Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama. They were joined by the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), Executive Secretariat of UNIORE, in the persons of its Director, José Thompson, and its Coordinator, Sofía Vincenzi.
