The Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR) has been accredited as a new Global Privacy Assembly -GPA- Observer as it has been found to meet the eligibility criteria set out in Rule 5.3(b) of GPA Rules and Procedures. Observer status has been granted for three years since September 23th.

The IIHR had requested to be an Observer to contribute its experience in matters of the protection of the right to privacy. "We thank the members of the GPA for accepting the Institute and we look forward to collaborating with the important work carried out by this network in the areas that are of our expertise," said Executive Director, Dr. Joseph Thompson upon receiving the news.

The Global Privacy Assembly first met in 1979 as the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. The Assembly has been the premier global forum for privacy and data protection authorities for more than four decades.

The Assembly seeks to provide leadership at the international level in data protection and privacy. It does so by connecting the efforts of more than 130 privacy and data protection authorities around the world.

During the meetings of the Assembly, the IIHR will be represented by Dr. Eduardo Bertoni, recognized international expert on the subject and current Representative and Coordinator of the IIHR's Regional Office for South America.
