On March 17, the IIHR Regional Office for South America and the Chilean Transparency Council organized a virtual seminar on the “OAS model law on access to information 2.0 – impact and pending tasks.”
Participating in the seminar were Joseph Thompson, IIHR Executive Director; Eduardo Bertoni, Coordinator of the Regional Office; Gloria de la Fuente of the Transparency Council; Gabriel del Piazzo of the Unit for Access to Public Information of Uruguay; Jaime Moreno and Dante Negro of the Organization of American States (OAS) and María Gracia Andia,of the Guarantor Body for the Right to Access the Information of the Buenos Aires City Government.
The seminar analyzed the means of implementing the Model Law and emphasized the importance of this type of standard in providing transparency in the access of public data and, thus, giving confidence to the citizenry in acceding to this type of information.
It was agreed that this type of standard acts against secrecy and would be a practical tool in every OAS Member State. Experiences were shared on the application of this tool in Uruguay, Argentina and Chile, countries in which the law has been implemented.
