San José, Costa Rica. A Webinar on “The International Criminal Court and its Reform”, in which participated Silvia Alejandra Fernández de Gurmendi, former President of the International Criminal Court, and Elizabeth Odio Benito, member of the IIHR General Assembly and President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, took place on August 24, 2021.
The Webinar was opened with a welcome by José Thompson, the IIHR Executive Director.
Elizabeth Odio, then introduced Ms. Fernández, who broadly covered the on-going debate on the measures that should be adopted to strengthen the system of the Statute of Rome. She gave an expanation of the sytem, the principal actors involved in the review of the Statute, the expected results and the possible impact on the region.
This review is building on the achievements and challenges evaluated in 2018 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Statute and among the matters now being debated are the limited success of the system of international criminal justice, the low rate of convictions, its limited impact and an insufficient cooperation.
The question and answer portion of the Webinar was moderated by Eduardo Bertoni, Alternate Representative and Coordinator of the IIHR Regional Office for South America, located in Montevideo. The Webinar ended with remarks by Ms. Odio and Ms. Fernández.
