IIHR holds series of virtual workshops in El Salvador

San José, Costa Rica. March 28, 2022. During the first quarter of 2022 as part of the New Human Rights Challenges: Promotion and Protection of the Environment, Reproductive Health and their Defense in Latin America project, specifically the component on the Promotion and protection of the human right to the sexual and reproductive health of the women and girls in El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica, the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR) held three virtual workshops conducted by Viviana Guerrero Chacón, Professor of the School of Philosophy of the University of Costa Rica and IIHR consultant, and Doreen Fwambo Araya, Sociologist of the National University of Costa Rica and a specialist in sexual and reproductive rights of adolescents and women. This project is sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, through the Embassy of Sweden.

The first workshop, held January 17 to February 10, was on Learning about the System of Indicators on Compliance of the Commitments of El Salvador in the area of Sexual and Reproductive Rights. Participating were 36 representatives of the following institutions: Office of the Prosecutor for the Defense of Human Rights; Save the Children; Office of the Mayor of San Salvador; Registry of the State of the Family; University of Costa Rica; GIZ -Strengthening the Rule of Law in Central America Project;  Education and Cooperation Foundation, Human Rights Committee; Afro-descendants and Multi-ethnics of Ecuador, Universidad Centroamericana; University of El Salvador; OSCE, Peru; CLADEM, El Salvador chapter, Educo Foundation, El Salvador.

The second workshop on Constructing a culture of the human rights with women health providers in El Salvador was held January 17 to February 8, with the participation of 15 representatives of institutions, such as the Ministry of Health of El Salvador, Salvadoran Institute of Social Security, Andrés Bello University, University of El Salvador and ISDEMU.

The third workshop on Constructing a culture of the human rights with women charged with enforcing the law in El Salvador was held from February 21 to March 15, with the participation of 22 representatives of the National Academy of Public Security and the Office of the Inspector General of Public Security.

The object of these manuals is to develop cognitive and attitudinal competence in the team of promotors so that they absorb what they learned and pass it along in a process of “Teaching the teachers,” from the pedagogical approach to the methodological design of a training program using workshops. The topics studied include the origin and the conceptualization of human rights, popular education, human rights, sexual and reproductive rights of women and the eradication of violence against women in El Salvador.
