IIHR in celebration of IDUAI

San José, Costa Rica and Montevideo, Uruguay. On September 28, as part of the celebrations of the International Day for Universal Access to Information 2021, Eduardo Bertoni, Representative and Coordinator of the IIHR Regional Office for South America, moderated the first panel “Access to Information Laws during the Decade of Action: Trends and Challenges,” organized by UNESCO, FOIANet and CLD.


As moderator, Mr. Bertoni presented the Assistant Director General for Communication and Information of UNESCO, Tawfik Jelassi, who formally inaugurated the panel, which was composed of the following individuals:

  • Toby Mendel, Executive Director, Center for Law and Democracy and President of FOIAnet, Canada;
  • Toby McIntosh, Editor -, Board of Directors, FOIAnet, United States of America;
  • Elvana Thaçi, Secretary of the Tromsø Agreement, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law; and
  • Anna Brandt, Swedish Ambassador to UNESCO and the OCDE, President of the PIDC, Sweden.


The panel discussed important international developments that have taken place and the progress that has occurred on the national level. 

The general theme of IDUAI in 2021 is “The right to know: building back better with access to information.”
