Quito, Ecuador. On September 28 and 29, 2021, this city hosted the International Seminar on Electoral Justice in the Americas, a high-level event in which José Thompson, Director of the IIHR and its Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), participated in the round table on “The strengthening of electoral institutionality as a guarantee of the democratic system.”
On the 29th, Mr. Thompson referred to the nature and powers of the electoral bodies in Latin America as guarantors of democracy and to the work of the IIHR; for example, he stated that “since 1985, CAPEL has carried out an impressive number of electoral observations in the world.” Also speaking were Piero Corvetto, National Head of the National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru; Jorge Salas Arenas, President of the National Jury of Elections of Peru and Arturo Cabrera Peñaherrera, President of the Contentious Electoral Tribunal of Ecuador.
The activity, organized by the Contentious Electoral Tribunal, was attended by delegations of the electoral bodies of numerous countries of the region.
