San José, Costa Rica. During the last three months of 2019, the Institute offered two on-line courses as part of the “New Challenges in Human Rights: Promotion and Protection of the Right to a Clean Environment, Reproductive Health and their Protection in Central America” project, financed by the Embassy of Sweden in Guatemala. They were given on the platform of the IIHR Inter-American Virtual Classroom.
The first, “Social Auditing with a focus on Human Rights” took place October 14 to December 4 with the general objective of “providing tools to develop capacities in the citizenry to independently exercise oversight of public institutions with regard to matters of its interest, with an emphasis on rights, particularly in the area of the environment.”
The second, which was auto-didactic, concerned “The Protection and Care of Defenders of the Environment” and was given October 28 to December 8. This course offered conceptual and practical tools that would encourage actions and measures of self-protection in order to prevent and control the risks that defenders of the right to a clean environment confront.
