Virtual and on-site diploma course on strategic litigation to defend and protect the right to a clean environment

San José, Costa Rica. The platform of the IIHR Inter-American Virtual Classroom is the site, from June 29 to September 30, 2020, of the virtual and on-site diploma course on “Strategic Litigation to Defend and Protect the Right to a Clean Environment.”

The tutor of the course is Francisco Rivera Juaristi, who is offering the following classes:

  • Introduction to the Inter-American System of Human Rights: norms and mechanisms
  • Identification of the problem: the situation of the human and environmental rights in Honduras and Guatemala 
  • Inter-American and domestic norms and standards to protect and defend the right to a clean environment
  • Access to environmental justice at the the Inter-American and domestic levels
  • Inter-American and domestic protection for the defenders of human rights and the environment

Larissa Segura is the coordinator of the activity, in which 41 justice operators from Honduras and Guatemala are participating.

The course is comprised of a combination of distance learning and on-site study. The virtual component includes pedagogical strategy designed for teaching and learning using the internet and written and audiovisual materials. During the on-site component, the participants will prepare a petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on a hypothetical case regarding the defense and protection of the right to a clean environmnt. In addition, the participants will play diverse roles in a moot case before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which will include the representation of the alleged victims, the defense of the State, the delegation of the Commission and the judges of the Court.
