IIDH Executive Director participates in debate on democracy, justice and citizenship

San José, Costa Rica. José Thompson, Executive Director of the IIHR and of the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), was invited by the Electoral Judiciary School and the International Advisory of the Superior Electoral Tribunal of Brazil (TSE) to participate in a virtual conference on “Democracy, Justice and Citizenship: An International Debate,” which occurred on August 28, 2020.

The event was held to examine the panorama of democracies in the world, especially those in Latin America, and the challenges and relative outlooks regarding the promotion of citizenship and access to justice in that field. The activity was also the scene of the launching of the book “Democracy, justice and citizenship: challenges and outlooks: homage to Luis Roberto Barroso,” the President of the TSE.

Participating in the debate, in addition to Mr. Thompson, were Roberto Barroso and Tarcisio Vieira de Carvalho Neto, Magistrates of the TSE. The moderators of the discussion were Daniel Castro Gomes da Costa and José Gilberto Scandiucci Filho.
