IIHR attends meeting that adopted Escazú Agreement

San José, Costa Rica. An IIHR delegation participated as observer at the Ninth Meeting of the Negotiating Committee of the Regional Agreement on Principle 10, which was held February 28 to March 4, 2018. The delegation was comprised of Nick Middeldorp, Evelyn Fernández and Alejandro Cruzzati, who work on the IIHR project “Promotion and Protection of the Environment and its Defense.”

At a meeting on March 4, the participating States adopted the “Regional Agreement on access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Escazú Agreement). The Agreement gives effect to the decisions taken at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio de Janeiro, 2012), set out in the Declaration on the Application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. The Escazú Agreement, one of the most important human rights instruments in recent times, specifically with reference to the right to a healthy environment, will be open for signature on September 27, 2018.
