UNIORE mission observes municipal elections in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. On March 14, 2020, a mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) began its observation of the Special Municipal Elections by meeting with the Magistrates of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), headed by its President, Julio César Castaños Guzmán, and by later speaking with the JCE Director of Elections.

The following day, the mission visited numerous polling places in various municipalities to observe the voting; witnessed the vote counting in three of them, and attended the official closing of the process at JCE headquarters. It then drafted a report containing its observations and recommendations, which was delivered to the JCE. 


The mission, comprised of individuals from the electoral bodies of Chile, Nicaragua, Mexico and Peru, was led by José Thompson, IIHR Executive Director and Director of its Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL). The CAPEL delegation also included Sofía Vincenzi and Andrea Tercero, Coordinator and Advisor, respectively
