International mission observes local elections in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica. An international mission observed the Costa Rican local elections held on February 7, 2016.

On February 5, the mission met with the President of Costa Rica and then heard experts speak on the local elections at the IIRH Inter-American Classroom. The following day, there was a discussion with the mayoral candidates for the San José electoral area and a visit to the headquarters of the Supreme Tribunal of Elections.

On election day, the members of the mission visited different areas of the country in order to be present at the opening of polling stations and to monitor the voting process until the polls closed, at which time they held an evaluation session before observing the transmission of voting results at the STE.

In addition, on February 5th the Supreme Tribunal of Elections signed agreements with the Central Electoral Commission of the Russian Federation and the Supreme Electoral Court of Bolivia.

Judges of the electoral bodies that are members of associations of electoral bodies from the region and from other continents took part in the mission. Participating on behalf of the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), the Executive Secretariat of the hemispheric Associations, were Joseph Thompson, who is also IIHR Executive Director, Sofía Vincenzi and Tasheena Obando.
