UNIORE observes municipal elections in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The 326th electoral observation mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) took place February 14-17, 2020, with the support of its Executive Secretariat, the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL).

Julio César Castaños Guzmán and Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo, Presidents of the Central Electoral Board and the Superior Electoral Tribunal of the Dominican Republic, and Marco Antonio Baños Martínez, advisor to the National Electoral Institute of Mexico and the head of the mission, launched the activities. On the first day, the mission was given details on the elections that were to take place on Sunday, the 16th, and attended a demonstration of the automated system of voting and transmittal of results. On election day, the members of the mission visited different polling places to observe the voting and, on the following day, presented their report, with observations and recommendations, to the electoral authorities.

The mission was comprised of 42 magistrates and staff of the electoral bodies of 16 Latin American countries and the IIHR/CAPEL, represented by José Thompson, Sofía Vincenzi and Tasheena Obando, Director, Coordinator and international advisor, respectively.
