UNIORE Virtual Advance Mission to Peruvian elections begins

San José, Costa Rica. On December 9, 2020, Piero Corvetto, National Head of the National Office of Elections of Peru (ONPE) met virtually with the Advance Mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) with regard to preparations for the elctions to be held in April 2021. At the meeting, the Mission was informed of progress in the organization of the elections, developments regarding local elections and the challenges due to the Covid pandemic, among other matters.

Participating in this first meeting were the UNIORE Presidency, currently held by the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary (TEPJF), both of Mexico, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Costa Rica (TSE), the Central Electoral Board (JCE) of the Dominican Republic and the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL).

Two meetings were held with ONPE staff on the morning of December 10. The first, with  Malena Tillit, of the Department of Electoral Organization and Regional Coordination, and the second with Pilar Biggio, of the Department of Electoral Information and Education. At the meetings, the members of the Mission received information on the progress made in both areas with respect to next year’s elections, the results in the development of local elections and the sanitary protocols.

Participating were representatives of the Superior Tribunal of Electoral Justice of Paraguay, the Presidency of UNIORE (INE and TEPJF), the Institute of Formation and Studies in Democracy of the TSE of Costa Rica, the Electoral Service of Chile and the team of the Executive Secretariat of UNIORE (IIHR/CAPEL).
