Bogotá, Colombia. On April 24, 2016, the IIHR representation in Colombia sponsored a specialized workshop on Human Rights in Perspective: Dialogue on Citizen Participation for the Promotion of Political Rights in Cuba during the Periods of Transition. The objective of this workshop was to improve the conceptual and methodological capabilities of the participants in negotiating and actively promoting political rights while they are engaged in political activities as part of civil society, with the idea of creating an agenda of participation, civic action and a search for peace and social inclusion in their country .
Participating in the workshop were the following civil society organizations in Cuba: Ciudadanos por la Integración Racial (CIR); Cuba Independiente y Democrática (CID), which includes the “Damas de Blanco”; Plataforma Feminista; Afro – Más (+); Partido Solidaridad Liberal Cubano and the Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Local (CEDEL). Collaborating in this workshop was Freedom House, a US NGO dedicated to the protection and promotion of freedom, democracy and human rights in the world, especially freedom of the press, by supporting defenders in different countries .
The different topics of the workshop were covered by Juan Navarrete, Adriana Piquero and Carlos Mendieta –Representative, Office Manager and Advisor of the IIHR Office, respectively. Also participating were Henry Velandia, Laura Ledezma and Martha Pardo .
The activity was part of the International Week of Civil Society and had as its theme Ciudadanos Activos, Acciones Responsables (ICSW 2016). It was organized by CIVICUS as part of its assembly of members, which was held in Bogotá and had the support of the Colombian Federation of NGOs .
