Bogotá, Colombia. At the invitation of the National Electoral Council and the National Registry, a mission of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) visited Bogotá during the period March 9-11, 2018 to observe the elections to the Colombian Legislature.
The mission, comprised of magistrates and staff of the member bodies of UNIORE, carried out a full program that included an academic event that covered “Technical innovations relating to the pre-electoral, electoral and post-electoral phases,”“Challenges and expectations of the National Electoral Council” and “Importance of international electoral observation in the framework of cooperation among electoral bodies.” There were also roundtables on the electoral panorama and on the “The electoral reality in Colombia as seen from the political organizations.” On the day of the vote, the mission visited different polling stations and concluded with an evaluation and a report for the country’s electoral bodies.
The Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), the Executive Secretariat of UNIORE, was represented by its Director, José Thompson, who is also the IIHR Executive Director, and the consultant, Evelyn Fernández.
