Mexico City. The Fourteenth Conference of the Inter-American Union of Electoral Bodies (UNIORE) took place October 25-26, 2018.
The event was opened by Lorenzo Córdova, President of the National Electoral Institute of Mexico (INE); Janine Otárola, President of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation of Mexico (TEPJF); María Elena Wapenka, President of UNIORE, and José Thompson, Director of IIHR and of CAPEL.
The central theme of the meeting was “The strengthening of electoral authorities: independence, professionalism and international cooperation.” The inaugural lecture, “Strengthening the Electoral Authorities of the Region,” was given by Fernando Tuesta Soldevilla, a Peruvian expert.
The participants also discussed the methodology of electoral observations, the follow up of recommendations and the relevance of the presence of the missions at elections.
It was decided at the meeting to transfer the UNIORE presidency to the INE and the TEPJF and to hold the next Conference in 2020 in the Dominican Republic, hosted by the Superior Electoral Tribunal and the Central Electoral Board of that country.
Representing the Executive Secretariat of UNIORE, the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL), were its Director, José Thompson, its Coordinator of Operations Sofía Vincenzi, and Tasheena Obando.
