Mexico City. The Eighteenth Inter-American Course on Elections and Democracy: Local Elections and Electoral Innovations in Latin America was held November 28-29, 2018. The activity was inaugurated by Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, President of the National Electoral Institute (INE); Héctor Marcos Díaz-Santana Castaños, Head of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Electoral Crimes (FEPADE); Mónica Aralí Soto Fregoso, Magistrate of the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation (TEPJF); Gustavo Anzaldo Hernández, President of the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico City; Mario Velázquez Miranda, President of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City and José Thompson Executive Director of the IIHR and of the Center for Electoral Promotion and Assistance (IIHR/CAPEL).
The main topics of this Course were presented in lectures and panels by a distinguished group of experts and staff of the electoral bodies.
In addition, the book Derechos políticos de las mujeres en Honduras y Guatemala (The political rights of women in Honduras and Guatemala) was presented. The book is based on the research of Flavia Freidenberg and was coordinated by IIHR/CAPEL.
The participating bodies also set up stands of their publications and electoral material, entitled The Path of Democracy in Latin America.
The event was organized by the Electoral Institute of Mexico City and IIHR/CAPEL, which was represented by Mr. Thompson; the Coordinator of Operations, Sofía Vincenzi, and the international advisors Tasheena Obando and Andrea Tercero.
