Inter-American Institute of Human Rights

The IIHR is an autonomous international institution of an academic nature. It was created in 1980 through an agreement signed between the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Republic of Costa Rica. Today it has become one of the world's leading centers for teaching and academic research on human rights, applying a multidisciplinary approach with an emphasis on the problems of the Americas. It is based in San José, Costa Rica. The IIHR Regional Office for South America is located at the OAS headquarters in the MERCOSUR Palace in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the IIIHR Office in Bogotá, Colombia.

Inter-American Classroom of Human Rights

The IIHR is an institution of academic nature, dedicated to research, advocacy and human rights education. For this reason, it cannot hear cases of human rights violations or endorse or make formal complaints against any State, nor can it decide on the degree of State compliance with respect to its international obligations in this area. The IIHR promotes respect for human rights set forth in the covenants and treaties of the inter-American system through education and training in human rights and democratic values.

The IIHR is an auxiliary body of the Inter-American system for the protection of human rights. It carries out local and regional projects for the dissemination of human rights in conjunction with leading non-governmental and public institutions in the countries of the region.
